For music and dance

Learn the tricky bar, then bring it up to tempo

Loop a riff, a passage or an eight-count, slow it down without losing your place, and let the speed trainer bring it back to full speed.

How it works

How to practise a song or dance section from a YouTube video

  1. 1

    Clip the passage

Paste the lesson, cover or performance link and set the start and end on the passage. Use the lead-in to start a beat early.

  2. 2

    Set your practice speed

Slow it to where you can play or dance it cleanly, or turn on the speed trainer to add a few percent each loop.

  3. 3

    Build a practice set

Clip every section of the piece. Sign in to keep them in a folder, or put them in order as a lesson for your students.

Practise the way teachers tell you to

Slow, accurate repetition, then small increases in tempo. That’s what the speed trainer does: it starts at the percentage you pick and adds your step on each loop, so you don’t stop to change settings between repeats.

A pause between loops gives you time to play the phrase back, and a repeat count stops after, say, ten times so you can move on.

For teachers of music and dance

  • Send students a link to the exact section, already slowed and looping.
  • Add notes with fingerings, counts or cues; timestamps in notes jump to that moment.
  • Compare two clips side by side, such as the original and a student’s video, with a shared speed.
  • Turn on private feedback comments pinned to moments in a clip.

Questions

Does slowing down change the pitch?

In most browsers YouTube’s player keeps the pitch when you change speed. Very slow speeds can sound less smooth.

Can I split a song into sections quickly?

Yes. Signed in, paste a list of timestamps with names (like 0:32 Verse, 1:05 Chorus) or use the video’s chapters to make all the clips at once.

Does it work for dance videos with mirrored moves?

Clips play the video as it was uploaded; there’s no mirror option.
